Leading

My Definition: Take command and lead others towards a common goal. If this goal is not accomplished, the leader must also take blame and feel the fall of not accomplishing the goal.

My Criteria: Goal oriented, responsible, fair, honest, open, and respectful.

Reflection: Senior Vice President of Delta Sigma Pi

My freshman year, I was elected as the Vice President of Community Service for Delta Sigma Pi. Through this position, it was my responsibility to come up with four different service events that our members could participate in. Through our requirements, members need to volunteer in at least three events but we always encourage them to participate in all four if they can. While I have to organize the events, it is also my responsibility to keep track of who has participated, how many events they participated in, and to show our members how fun these events can be if everyone shows up.

The feeling of helping those in need or those who are less fortunate and can’t provide for themselves is a great feeling and my goal was to show our members this exact feeling. After organizing the community service events we had done in years past, like The Big Event, it occurred to me that we hadn't done any new "original" events. After extensive research I found that the Ronald McDonald House Charity had many opportunities our members could volunteer for. As business majors, we are pretty competitive by nature and this aligned well with one of the opportunities we had. The Ronald McDonald House Charity had a competition every year that required members to gather soda tabs. These soda tabs would be melted and sold off and any money made was donated to the Ronald McDonald House Charity. I decided to speak about this opportunity in our next meeting and all of the members loved the idea. It was a charity we hadn't helped before and it was an easy task they could help with.

Another opportunity that came to light through the Ronald McDonald House Charity was to make gifts for children in hospitals. After months of planning and researching, I set up the first “BTHO Cancer” event for Delta Sigma Pi. The volunteer event was to make capes and tutus for children who have cancer or are severely injured in Houston and Galveston hospitals. We wanted to help show these kids that they are not dressing up to be the princess or superhero they would like to be, but the princess and superhero they already are. For the first time in the organizations history, every single member came out on a Saturday morning to help put these capes and tutus together. All our supplies were donated and paid for by local businesses. Attached is the letter our executive team and I came up with to send out to businesses.

It was a wonderful experience to have the opportunity to lead my organization to volunteer and have fun doing it. While volunteering was a requirement, I know that many of our members didn't see it as another box to check. They had fun, felt the good they were doing, and even asked if we could make this a permanent community service event. I feel strongly that everyone should volunteer and help others and our members did just that. We received amazing thank you letters from the children who received the capes and tutus and it was a beautiful reminder of the hard work our members did.

While we received thank you letters from the children who wore the capes and tutus, I also received many thank you emails from Execs in the Ronald McDonald House Charity.
